Radio Newark's Vicky Cozens kicks off Newark College's Big Welcome celebration

The College held a morning of inspirational talks followed by a festival of games, food and music to welcome the class of 2019/20.

Former business student, Vicky Cozens, shared the secrets of her success and how she overcame her low self-esteem to become a breakfast radio presenter and entrepreneur. She encouraged students to embrace all learning opportunities.

“I loved my time at Newark College and signed up for extra courses whenever I could. I gained more independence and confidence here,” she said.

“I want to reassure students and tell them not worry if they don’t know what they want to do yet. I recommend they get out there, knock on doors and get plenty of work experience and often things fall into place.”

The College then hosted an array of stalls, fun activities and sporting competitions to engage learners further. Local businesses were in attendance including G.H. Porter, the Liz Hobbs Group, St John’s Ambulance and KG Archery. Former Commonwealth and European Champion, Esham Pickering was also on hand to share his boxing skills and music was provided by students on the musical instrument crafts courses.

Learner, Shanice Langford said: “There was a good vibe with lots of people and everyone laughed and had fun.”

“My teacher was funny. I was surprised they joined in,” said fellow student Leia Peck.

Advanced Curriculum Coach, Penny Taylor said: “Today’s Big Welcome aimed to allow staff and students to bond, work together and build relationships that enhance learning and teaching.

“We wanted students to see their tutors as normal people. This was certainly achieved and the impact it’s had on everyone is incredible; the smiling faces make it all worthwhile.”
