Lincoln College is pleased to host its annual Professional Industries event - designed to bring together businesses from the Construction, Engineering, Hair & Beauty, Health & Social Care, and Computing industries to exhibit their offerings to the students.
The industries event is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to connect with the future workforce whilst discussing industry-relevant apprenticeships, internships, work experience opportunities and career paths. As the next generation of professionals, learners can explore their options and consider their next steps.
Following a variation of engaging guest speakers, enriching activities and competitions - we wrapped up the week with an awards ceremony for students that acknowledged the showcase of their impressive skillsets. Winners were rewarded with industry-specific tools to help them on their journeys at college and beyond.
Mark Locking, Principal and CEO of the Lincoln College Group, said: “The Professional Industries event is extremely purposeful in giving students access to career-driven opportunities from a variety of fields.
“This encompasses our goal as an organisation to deliver employer-led engagement. Our industry-specific competitions allow students to refine and recognise their talents, giving them the confidence to seek their career aspirations. This event is one of the many we offer to support the learner’s journey to becoming extraordinary.”
Mark Snell, Learning and Skills Lead for Plumbing and Electrical Installations, said: “It has been great to work collaboratively with Anglian Water, the in-college sessions that Rob Edmunds and Mark Auckland have delivered has expanded the industry-relevant knowledge on current water regulations for our Plumbing Apprentices and full-time learners. Which was informative and complements the curriculum – enhancing the learner environment.”
Lauren Gordon, Area Development Manager at Brewers Decorating Centre, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to come and support the Lincoln College Painting and Decorating department - we need more people in the trade so it’s important to invest in training learners.”
Students learn from professionals in their sector, discover exciting career opportunities and gain confidence stepping into the professional world.

Professional Industries Week allows learners to explore their options, develop employability skills and consider their next steps. Students are not always sure what career path they would like to pursue - they have the unique opportunity to participate in a trade exchange - to try out other potential interests from alternate industries. For learners happy with their study choice, it’s a chance to appreciate what fellow students are learning and pick up another skill.
Areas that participated in the exchange included Hairdressing, Mechanical, Automotive, Electrical & Civil Engineering. Health & Social care. Beauty, Early years, Electronics, computing and construction; carpentry & Joinery, brickwork, plumbing, painting & decorating and plastering.
Early in the week over 125 students engaged with an Employability workshop - including how to start your own business, delivered by Reece Leggett from the University of Lincoln.
Reece Legget, Student Enterprise Coordinator, said: "We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to deliver these talks on starting a business in Lincolnshire to Lincoln College students. At Student Enterprise, we believe promoting entrepreneurship in further education is vital for developing essential employability skills like commercial awareness and communication. Lincolnshire's thriving business ecosystem offers great opportunities for students to consider starting up their businesses.’’
Students were engaged in the entrepreneurship and self-employment talk, workshops like these can spark enthusment within the student community and inspire their academic journey.
