Employers support college construction week

More than 30 local and regional employers supported this year's Lincoln College Construction Week.

The annual event is designed to showcase our students’ talent to local employers, give construction firms a voice in how we shape our curriculum and start conversations about job and apprenticeship opportunities.

Trade competitions in brickwork, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating and plumbing have been taking place all week.

These were judged by local employers, who handed out amazing tools and workwear prizes.

Employers also took part in a careers fair to showcase their job and apprenticeship opportunities that will be available when our students qualify in the Summer.

Lincoln College Group Managing Director for Education and Training Mark Locking said: “This is a great example of our mission, to be led by employers in developing highly skilled and productive employees.

“It’s not about just giving young people qualifications, it’s much more about us nurturing the skills and behaviours that employers need so our students have the ability to walk into great jobs and build rewarding careers for themselves.

“A huge thank you to all of the employers who supported this event and to our staff who work so hard to create these opportunities for our students.”

Director of Architecture at Waldeck, Stuart Denniss, is a former Lincoln College student who was supporting the event.

“This is really important to us as a company, it’s where I started and where I learnt the foundations for the career I have now. At Waldeck we’re building up the number of apprentices we take on and this is the perfect opportunity to see the talent that is available and to start building relationships with our future employees,” he said.

Proposals Manager at Hobson Porter, Jackie Coleman said: “For us it’s about showcasing the careers available in construction, from being a brickie to being and architect. It’s also about building relationships with people who we want to take on as we increase our work in the Lincoln area.

“We were also delighted to be able to donate a great tool kit as one of today’s student prizes.”
