Dynamic Industry Week at Lincoln College ignites student prospects

Industry week was filled with immersive and enriching experiences for our aspiring learners at both our Lincoln and Newark campuses. From dynamic trade exchanges and engaging curriculum competitions to a highly anticipated Careers Expo, this week offered a refreshing break from the typical learning environment, allowing students to contemplate their next steps, whether in education or the workplace. 

Kicking off the week, students put their knowledge and skills to the test through competitions that were directly relevant to their studies. The winners of these competitions were rewarded with a range of exciting prizes - from valuable toolkits to career-supporting vouchers.

“Our tailored competitions empower students to hone their skills, fostering the confidence needed to pursue their professional goals. This event is just one of the many initiatives we offer to support students on their journey towards achieving greatness." 

As part of Industry Week, the annual Careers Expo presented a valuable opportunity for businesses to engage with the upcoming talent pool, delving into discussions around apprenticeships, internships, work experience opportunities, and career pathways relevant to the industry. With a lineup of over 65 employers nationwide, some of the exhibitors included Bowmer and Kirkland, Galliford Try, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, Nicholsons Chartered Accountants, Siemens Energy, and Affinity. 

Fay Yates, Project Manager at WT Partnerships, said: “The younger generation can offer new perspectives and streamline processes. Events like the Careers Expo are about spotting talent, harnessing their skills and allowing them to grow.” 

Leigh Warsop, Repair Expert at Currys, said: “Apprentices are a massive part of our business - they are the future of our workforce, which is why we invest so much in them to give them the technical skills and qualifications that they need. We’ve had a lot of success stories with our apprentices, many going on to become experts or first-line managers and having great careers in the wider business.” 

Later in the week, during trade exchanges, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and explore sessions from different industries, broadening their horizons and discovering new passions with a diverse lineup of interactive sessions from Hospitality and Sport to Hairdressing and Construction. 

Additionally, students had valuable insights on post-18 options and decision-making from LincsHigher, along with fun activities as part of our Project You initiative. Other sessions included developing CV and interview skills and personal development skills. Students learned how to practise daily resilience techniques, develop coping strategies, ways to digital detox and gardening for mental health and well-being. 

Industry Week provides students with a valuable glimpse into sectors they may not have previously considered - giving them the opportunity to explore new paths and possibilities. Students benefit from regular support from their progress coaches to keep them on track and guide them towards success.
