AHE Level 3

Access to Higher Education - Humanities & Social Science Full-Time Level 3

  • Campus

    Lincoln Campus

  • Start Date

    September 2024

  • Duration

    1 Year (Full-time)

The Access to University programme (Access to HE Diploma) is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for Higher Education. The course is tailored to improve confidence in lectures, seminars and discussion groups as well as writing essays.  It is an intensive course intended for mature students (minimum age 19 years) and is especially intended for those who are returning to education after several years or looking for a ‘new start’.

Most students study Psychology and Sociology but there are options to combine one of these subjects with either History or English Literature.  Successful completion of the course is designed to allow you direct entry into Higher Education after one year of study (as opposed to the two years for the A level route) on to a wide range of degree courses such as Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Social Policy, Politics, Social Science etc.

The vast majority of students achieve a place at their first choice institution and whilst most mature students elect to study locally at one of Lincoln’s two universities, previous students have obtained places at UK wide universities including the prestigious ‘Russell Group’ institutions including Cambridge, Edinburgh, Bristol, Durham etc.

You will need Mathematics and English GCSE (minimum grade 4 or equivalent) prior to enrolling on the programme.

Some universities may accept Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications instead of GCSEs. If you possess a Level 2 equivalent and have written evidence that the university you intend to apply to accepts them as part of their entry requirements, you will be accepted onto the Access to University course.

You must possess at least one Level 2 qualification in English or Maths. If you do not possess both English and Maths Level 2 qualifications, an alternative condition of entry is that you must complete a diagnostic test to demonstrate you are capable of successfully studying and achieving the missing qualification alongside your Access to University studies.

You will also be required to complete some pre-enrolment tasks.

Assessment is a combination of written assessments and assignments.

You will require general stationery items and access to the internet; PCs are available on campus.
